OneDotZero UK/Sin (Revisited) ♺

Premise:
The original video was made in HD for Onedotzero event in Singapore 2006 among other things commissioned. This was done in a collaboration with a fashion designer. The video work was then revisited, adding an abstract narrative, an short interpretationof Dante's Divine Comedy books. Technically, more processed look was employed giving an old cinema treatment throughout the whole video. The result is a dark yet grungy fashion art video made a year later (2007).

Workflow:

This work includes; Directing talent against chroma green backdrop. Taking notes of Studio lighting (real world) information for CG lighting setup in 3D max's 3D environment. Generate particles in Autodesk 3D Max (using PFlow) referenced to chamfered edges cube (simple modelled) as 3D cube particles. Footages was then edited and keyed using AE plugin Keylight (The Foundry). The keyed plate then placed as background guide template in 3D environment to match and adjust the 3D animation to the background keyed plate. Rendered the final 3d composites with V-ray renderer in passes, after applying the right shader colour and CG lighting setup setting with (Real-world lighting information).
★ The final result was then composited in AE in layers; Keyed footages and multiple 3D passes rendered together with additional graphic layers. Effect plugins (in AE) was employed e.g Color grading tool.

Additional technical info: ( new treatment)

★ Digitising old VHS tapes that have scratches and dusts on some blank scenes found mainly in old grindhouse movies. Royalty free scratches and dust footage was also used. All dust and scratches footages was then blended with the final edited main footages now in 4:3 in Adobe After Effect. Several effect plugins was then used on the final composited footage to make it more of a dirty look to it. Music was done partly by Tim Koch and rest was edited in using royalty free Japanese traditional sound.

Case Studies:

The challenged was to adjust and match the lighting and the movement of the character on screen in 3D environment. This includes the cubes floating environment, collision and disintegration effects. Therefore various passes rendered to get the right ones before the final renders. The time taken to render was 3 days but then eventually was reduce by employing an time efficient method for the final compositing in AE. The method was to render full with all information including alpha. This is then rendered in with different depth to match the camera in AE in layers. The floating motion was motion scripted to save time.
